Union Memorial, Vanceburg, Kentucky

The most unique thing you will find in Vanceburg is a tall memorial to the 107 Union Soldiers from Lewis County who gave their lives fighting for the North during America's Civil War. This monument is said to be the only Union Memorial built by public subscription south of the Mason-Dixon Line, except for those in cemetaries. It is a reminder that many communities, both in the South and the North, were sorely divided during the War Between the States.
It's interesting to note that Kentucky was listed as a Union State. Yet, the vast majority of Kentucky counties have monuments to the Confederacy but not to the Union.
Kentucky, which was a a border state during the Civil War, was the birthplace to both Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, and to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America
The monument is in front of the Lewis County Courthouse, in the center of Vanceburg

  1. My Dad;s ancestor was an original settler of Kentucky in 1795 but his Grandson moved to India at the outbreak of the civil war. Meanwhile Mom's ancestor joined the Union Cavalry. https://sites.google.com/site/volvoogc70/home.
