Old Congregational Church, Scituate, Rhode Island

This historic old Congregational church building on Greenville Road, Scituate, Rhode Island, was built in 1834. No longer a functional church it is now owned by the town the building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. An interesting feature is that the pews pews face the front door of the church, presumably to embarrass latecomers.

Point Judith Lighthouse, Rhode Island

Point Judith Lighhouse sits on a rocky finger of land which reaches more than a mile into the ocean on the rugged Atlantic coast of Rhode Island. It is on the west side of the entrance to Naragansett Bay.

There has been a lighthouse on this dangerous and rocky shore since 1810, the first being built of wood and destroyed by a storm after standing for only 6 years. The current light is actually the third one at Point Judith. It is an octagonal 51-foot tower made of brownstone, distinctively painted dark brown on the top half and white on the bottom. The old keeper's house was torn down long ago. However an oil house, 1917, and a brick fog signal building, 1923, are still standing beside the tower. The bricks are painted white and covered with a red roof.

The lighthouse underwent extensive renovations in 2000, and is said to be fit for another 100 years.Since 1954, the light has been automated and it is still an active aid to navigation, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The grounds are easily accessible and may be visited daily during daylight hours, but the interior of the lighthouse is not open to the public.
