In 1843 the state of Virginia formed Ritchie County from parts of Harrision, Lewis, and Wood Counties. Ritchie County was named for Thomas Ritchie, a journalist who had been the editor of The Richmond Enquirer and The Washington Record. He called Ritchie County his "Little Gem".
Harrisville, the county seat was established in 1832, but not chartered until 1869. The town, named for pioneer settler Thomas Harris, has about 1,800 residents. The county-wide population is just over 10,000.
Ritchie County is home to North Bend State Park.
