Rhea County Courthouse, Dayton, Tennessee

The Rhea County Courthouse was the site of the famous Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925. The trial was America's biggest news event of the year. Arguments for and against the teaching of Creation/Evolution in Tennessee public schools were presented by the two most powerful lawyers in the country: Clarance Darrow and William Jennings Bryan.

The courthouse still looks much the same now as it did then. Visitors are welcome to go upstairs and see the still active courtroom where the trial took place. There is a small but very intesting museum in the basement of the courthouse
