Fort Lawton, Magnolia Springs, Georgia

Magnolia Springs State Park, Jenkins County, Georgia: Camp Lawton, also called Fort Lawton, was a Confederate military prison during the War Between the States. The stockade covered 42 acres and was considered to be the largest in the world. The prison was occupied on Oct. 10, 1864 to relieve the overcrowded conditions at Andersonville Prison in Macon County. It was abandoned on November 17, just five weeks after it was opened, because of the approach of Sherman's army.
