For such a small town, and off the beaten path, Grafton has several claims to fame. It is the birthplace of Mother's Day, the site of the first casualty of the War Between the States and home to West Virginia's only National Cemetary.
Grafton, with a population was 5,489 at the 2000 census, is the seat of Taylor County in north-central West Virginia. The City of Grafton was chartered in 1856. It is believed, that it is named after John Graften, a civil engineer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The town has declined since the glory days of the railroad.
