Catedral Metropolitana, or the Metropolitan Cathedral, is an imposing twin towered structure in the heart of Guatemala City. It stands 300 feet long and 100 feet wide, on the east side of Parque Central. The cathedral was designed by the Spanish architect Marcos Ibáñezand and was built in the neo-classical style with completion in 1815.Inside the historic Cathedral are many works of art that were originally in the Cathedral of Antigua Guatemala, which was the nation's first capital. The image of the Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro is the oldest image in Guatemala, having been brought into the country by Hernan Cortés in 1522.
The Cathedral also contains the first pipe organ in the country, installed here in 1937. The Cathedral has survived through three major earthquakes, in 1830, 1917 and 1976.
