In the state of Florida, or the entire United States for that matter, it would be difficult to find a more remote spot than the Dry Tortugas. This cluster of 7 tiny islands of coral and sand is 68 miles west of Key West, in the Florida Straits, between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. It is much closer to Havana, Cuba than to Miami, Florida.
The Dry Tortugas were named by Ponce de Leon who discovered them in 1513. They are called "dry" because there is no fresh water to be found on the islands, and "tortugas" which is the Spanish word for "turtle." Ponce de Leon provisioned his ships with fresh meat from the abundance of sea turtles found here. The Dry Tortugas are famous for two things: a fabulous array of birds and marine life - and the site of Fort Jefferson, on Garden Key, the largest brick fortification ever built in the Western Hemisphere.
Today Fort Jefferson, the Dry Tortugas and the waters and shoals surrounding them are preserved as a National Park. Construction on the fort began in 1846. It was to stand guard over the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. The fort was never completed and never saw military action. It became obsolete at the end of the War Between the States, when it was turned into a prison. The most famous inmate to be incarcerated here was Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.
The Dry Tortugas is easily accessible by float plane or boat. Tours are available out of Key West or Marathon Key. I have been there twice, flying from Marathon. The expensive part is the plane ticket, although it is reasonable for such a great adventure. Upon arrival, asmall entrance fee is charged to tour Fort Jefferson.
