Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church

Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama, is the only local church of which Martin Luther King, Jr., served as pastor, and it was from here that he rose to national prominence as the leader of the civil rights movement. Today it is a National Historic Landmark. More than just a tourist attraction, the church continues to be an active local congregation.

Tours are available, usually twice a day, depending on the schedule of local church services and activities. On the tour you will see the modest pulpit where Martin Luther King, Jr., first preached his message of hope and brotherhood. Dexter Avenue Baptist Church was also the center point of the Montgomery bus boycott, inspired by Rosa Parks. A large mural in the church depicts King's civil rights crusade from Montgomery to Memphis, where he was assassinated.

More than just a tourist attraction, the church continues to be an active local congregation.
